Getting around

There’s no need to feel stuck in Goa. It’s a particularly small state and there are a number of ways for you to get out and about to explore.

How can I travel around Goa?

Getting out and about while you’re on holiday in Goa is easy. Taxis are cheap, tuk-tuks are fun and driving is also an option. Yet, if you don’t fancy getting behind a wheel yourself, then why not hire a car that comes with a driver!

Driving in Goa

Can I drive in Goa? This is a very common question we’re asked by first-time visitors, and the answer is ‘yes’.

However, it comes with a but…

Think of India and no doubt you imagine chaotic roads rammed with tuk tuks, lorries, cars, crowds and cows! You’re not wrong. Driving in the big Indian cities and towns can be hairy at best.

In the quieter regions, things can be less frenzied. And the good news is, driving in India is on the left-hand-side of the road and most signs are in English. What’s more, Google Maps is fairly reliable too.

In Goa itself, the main highways tend to be well maintained and lit. However, be prepared for potholes and narrow lanes in the more rural areas – normally unlit and often unpaved. And along the coast, particularly around the popular tourist hubs in the north, expect congestion.

Goa may be India’s smallest state and one of the least populated, but in the peak holiday season, it’s a magnet for national and international holidaymakers. The traffic multiplies and parking can be challenging.

Taxis and car hire in Goa

If the idea of driving in Goa is daunting, then you’re not alone. And the great thing is, it really doesn’t matter. You can still explore to your heart’s content – simply hail a cab.

Taxis are readily available in tourist areas and often of a good standard.

You’ll be astounded at how cheap it is to go from A to B. However, always make sure that you agree on the fare before you set off.

Car & driver in one:

Alternatively, don’t just rent a taxi, hire a driver too! By renting a taxi and a driver for a few hours or even a whole day, you can completely relax. The cost depends on the distance travelled, the duration and the type of vehicle you choose.

To be driven around in a hatchback typically costs around £20 for eight hours or 80 kilometers (prices as per 2025)! Always agree the price before setting off.

And let’s not forget the tuk-tuk:

These iconic, yellow and black auto-rickshaws are a fun and nifty way to get around and cost a matter of pounds – although always agree a price with your driver before hopping aboard. It’s also worth noting that some tuk-tuks can be poorly maintained.
