How much do things cost in Goa?

Goa holidays are excellent value for money, with the price of eating out and buying local handicrafts very low. This means you can afford to splash out and treat yourself, making your time in Goa even more memorable.

What is the currency in Goa?

The currency in Goa is the Indian rupee (INR). The Indian rupee is what’s called a ‘limited currency’, meaning you can only take around £250 worth of rupees into the country  (unless you’re an Indian resident, in which case you are allowed to take in more). Hence, we suggest exchanging money on arrival. Saying that, we do not recommend exchanging currency at the airport as the exchange rate is usually very poor and queues are common. You can exchange money either in the hotels or in shops in most resorts. You can currently find exchange rates of around INR 128 to £1 (May 2026).

In most hotels, bigger restaurants and urban areas, you can easily use your bank cards to pay for things. However, in the more rural areas, in the markets and in some beach shacks, actual money is best as cards may not be accepted.

Please bear in mind it’s customary to barter with stall owners. Anywhere between a 25-50% reduction from their opening price would be a good discount to aim for.
