Hampi by train World Heritage Site

Hampi is one of India’s most stunning and fascinating archaeological sites, today recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, though once serving as the imperial capital of Vijayanagar in the 14th century.

UNESCO Heritage Sites in Goa

This two-night and three-day excursion is perfect for those looking to delve further into the cultural and historical prowess of Southern India during their Goa holiday.

You don’t just have to be a culture vulture or history buff to be amazed by the ruins of Hampi, such is the site’s grandeur and intricacy.

Located in Karnataka, Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from 1336 to 1565. It was one of the largest and wealthiest cities of its time, attracting traders from Persia, Portugal and across India.

Today Hampi is celebrated for having more than 1,600 surviving monuments, including temples, palaces, houses and pavilions, spread across nearly 30sq km, earning it the title of the ‘world’s largest open-air museum’.

Your early morning collection from your hotel and subsequent train journey will see you arrive in the town of Hospet, 13km from Hampi and where your hotel is based, in the late afternoon.

After an early dinner, take the chance to shop in Hospet’s vibrant market before grabbing an early night as you prepare for your tour of the archaeological site the following day.

Embark on a full day’s guided tour of Hampi’s primary sites.

Highlights include visiting the grandest of Hampi’s religious monuments, the Vittala Temple, and the imposing Virupaksha Temple – one of India’s oldest functioning temples.

After a few hours of rest back  at your hotel you’ll venture out again to stroll along the shores of the beautiful Tunghabadra River, before proceeding to the highest point of Hampi for sunset.

The return train journey the following day will see you arrive back in Goa in the early afternoon.
